Oh…my…word…
This is one of the best books that I have read, and I will be recommending it for as long as people are asking me for recommendations. This book did not do anything that I expected, and I am not sure anyone would be able to appreciate how fantastic this story is unless they read it. I originally started this book as one of the best thrillers I have read – but, as you will see as you read this post, I am not sure I can be so bold as to put it in one place (although, if you like thrillers, you will love this book).
I am ever so grateful that Tandem Collective gifted me a copy of this to read on a readalong with a fantastic team of bookworms, as it is a book I may have missed, otherwise I want to make sure other readers do not miss it.
I absolutely can’t give any of this tale away other than tell you that nothing will be as you expect. The background I will give you is that Eleanor Teague is ‘trapped’ in a gothic manor house, isolated from the city, but living with her husband and a couple of servants as our story begins. And you believe you are engaged in a classic gothic story; an isolated manor house, slightly disturbing staff who always seem to appear from the shadows and that feeling of impending doom because surely not everything is as it seems. And, as the secrets of the tale are revealed, you are taken on quite the narrative journey – and I am pretty certain you would not see any of it coming.
This is an incredible piece of storytelling from M. K. Hill; he has crafted a tale that will appeal to lovers of so many different genres. In fact, I believe that this book is genre-defying, because there is so much to it. In fact, my three word review was ‘genre-defying, thrilling, gothic’, but I am not sure even that does this book justice.
I am just going to say again that if you have the chance to read this book, please do – and let me know, because I think it is a book that could spark a lot of conversation – about far more than you could imagine.
